Morgan and minted from 1878 through 1904, with a final issue in 1921, the Morgan Dollar was authorized by the Bland-Allison Act, which required the Treasury to purchase silver and strike it into dollar coins.
The Pittman Act of 1918 ordered the melting of approximately 270 million Morgan Dollars to provide silver for the war effort, leaving surviving high-grade specimens disproportionately scarce across the series.
