About this coin
Designed by James B. Longacre and minted from 1859 to 1909, the Indian Head Cent replaced the short-lived Flying Eagle Cent and served as the principal U.S. minor coin for half a century.
Composition shifted from copper-nickel to bronze in 1864. The series was retired in 1909 and replaced by the Lincoln Cent, which became the first U.S. circulating coin to feature a real person.
